Many visitors return from their Caribbean holiday raving about their horseback riding excursion through the hills and beach of Jamaica's North Coast. Mount your sturdy steed and roam through the places you have heard about, passing sugar factories and grand estates some of which date back hundreds of years.
If you haven't heard about the Taino Indians' rich history, beliefs, and cultural past, you will learn the fascinating story of this indigenous group who existed before Columbus arrived. While riding through a natural wetland, you will pass beneath lush almond and coconut trees and actually see the places you have heard about, visiting the excavations carried out by archaeologists, who have been digging to uncover the little known history of this region.
When you arrive at the beach you will be able to taste the succulent local produce in a rustic beach hut, and then for the really fun part....changing into a bathing suit and rushing through the waves on horseback. The saddles are left on for safety reasons, so there are no worries about staying on your horses' back. After this thrilling ride, you will take a relaxing saunter along a deserted beach which is inhabited by heron and various other water birds who fish in the shallow waters. While traveling through the mangroves, you will be able to discern the remains of an eighteenth century warehouse and an ancient waterwheel, all part of an abandoned sugar plantation.
What a day!! History, horseback riding, lovely scenery, mysterious ruins, and the unforgettable sights and sounds of rural Jamaica.

I went to Ocho Rios on a Carnival cruise w/ my mom and other family members. I booked online with Jaital prior to going on the cruise and I am very glad I did. The activities I chose for myself and mom (age 64) were horseback riding and river tubing. The coordinator for our activities was Alphonso Aarons. He picked us up at the cruise port and dropped us off w/ another driver who remained our driver for the rest of the day. His name was Adrian Bryan and he was very friendly and helpful. Our first stop was horseback riding and we were dropped off at a beautiful site. Our guide\'s name was Craig and I he was wonderful. He was warm and genuine and very patient w/ my mom. He gave her a calm horse (Ivana). I asked for a spirited horse and I got one! (Foxy). I could tell Craig was very good with the horses. Craig led my mother and I on horseback on a trail through a beautiful forest and then to a beach where he had some fresh fruit and bottled water. We rested for a while then rode the horses through the water to cool off. The views were stunning. Then we rode back to the stables (about a 2-hour trip) where our driver, Adrian was waiting. We were then driven to the White River where we were to go river tubing w/ Calypso (I think that was the name). I was a little concerned that the water would be freezing. I brought wetsuits for my mom and I, but the guide assured us we wouldn\'t need them so we donned our water shoes and got into innertubes w/ our guide Vivian. The water was cold at first but I quickly got used to it as we began drifting. Vivian kept my mom and my tubes together by holding on to us and at the first set of rapids we laughed and screamed like little girls. The rapids are not huge - this activity is suitable for anyone. Vivian was a lot of fun - he sang to us the entire time - everything from reggae to beach boys to the hokey pokey and I found myself laughing and singing along with him. The water was clear and the foliage around us was breath-taking. We encountered one guy taking photos to sell to us at the bottom of the river ($6 for the photo - I bought one) and we called him the paparazzi. We also ran into a group of guys having a bbq and we waved and said hello to them, but other than that we had the river to ourselves. At one point we stopped and Vivian and I climbed out and jumped off a cliff into the river and then I climbed out again and did the rope swing. This was my favorite part! Then we had a lazy ride down to the bottom where our driver was waiting. From there our driver dropped us off at a shopping area and recommended a store. He said he would be back in time to get us to the ship on time. The shopping center was called \"Taj Mahal\" and the store was called Payless. The sales staff were friendly and helpful and not pushy at all. My mom bought lots of souvenirs: t-shirts, jewelry, a handbag, a dress and I bought a handmade steel drum for $20. Alphonse was waiting for us afterwards with some rum punch and he waited with us for Adrian to come back and take us to the ship. I cannot say enough good things about these guys. They were organized and trustworthy. We were able to leave our bags at the horse stable and with the driver with no problems. They were warm, entertaining and seemed to want to ensure that we had fun in their town. We did tip each guide and driver and I strongly recommend doing this as these guys are working their butts off when the ships are in port and really taking care of us and showing us a good time. Jaital offers all kinds of excursions in Ocho Rios and other cruise ports. If you are going on a cruise, take a look at their website and see what they offer. My mom and I had an amazing day. If I go back to Jamaica I will definitely be booking with them again. Ocho Rios has so much to do!!! It was hard to narrow it down, but the activities I chose were fun and easy for my mom to do and enjoy and the personal attention from the guides was wonderful...[Tripadvisor re-post]

We booked 4 tours with Jaital april 23 - april 26 and EVERYTHING we did was purely amazing!!! Silvan was our driver for 3 days and he is the BEST! he took us into the hood and we were able to get authentic street corner food which for us was great. We also got to stop any where we asked him too he was just so nice! The tours we did was 1st the beach horse back ride, that was such an exhilarating feeling when you feel the horse running through the water. now thats real horse power your feeling!
Next was the Blue Hole. Deff a must! We\'ve done the Dunns River Falls in past visits to Jamaica and we both agree (boyfriend and i) that the Blue Hole is so much nicer! You get to jump off rocks, climb falls, walk down a fall which feels like your going to slip and then you jump right. After that you get to climb into a cave and swim out with the cascade of water falling on you its just beautiful! They have a rope you can use to swing into the water then the tour guides jump from higher places. Its a must do! The next day we met with Silvan again on time and i must say his car is A++ Clean each and every time you get in.
Well the next day we went to Ricks Cafe unlucky for us it rained that day which cut our time short however Silvan being so nice stopped at a local beach where we were able to spend some time (not rushed at all) the water was so clear and warm it was out of magazine. On the way back to hotel we saw some men selling things on the street corner and Silvan bought us some of the peper shirmp to try (as you can see we like to try food haha) and it was pretty good. I didnt like the shrimp still had the shell but hey it was like 8 big shirmp for $1. not bad! Lets see that night we actually went to a... strip club! Shades! haha really not as crazy as we thought it was gonna be pretty much a regular strip club which serves 4 dollar STRONG drinks!
The last day before returning home we went to the Enchanted Gardens which was nice they had seveeral falls you can climb into and some parts of water you can get into just not deep enough to actually swim in. This was pretty short. The also have a bird section where we got to feed a peacock which that to us was pretty cool. From here we went do to river tubbing. This was so nice! the river is like a lazy river that just drags you down while you sit back and take in the beauty thats surrounding you. The tour guide sings you songs and ours had a dog which swam next to us the entire ride! pretty impressive if you ask me! Well we extended our tour to end at the bach for an extra $5 each. (not bad again) they do make a stop in the middle to show you pictures that take of you along the way. then your back on your tube and headed down the stream. Getting close to the beach you run into a fishing community where they have people selling food. Our guide was able to stop out ride and let us get some fresh fish fry (again with the food haha) being that we were on water we were able to pay for the food and the extra $5 at the end of the ride when our driver got us. The entire ride you can stay looking down and youll be able to see everything beneath you. So pretty! Jamaica to us is paradise! Silvan was absolutely great!!!! for us he was above what we couldve wanted in a driver. Made all the stops we wanted took us to the hood to see the other side of Jamaica, took us to small supermarkets where we were able to make some purchases of local goods! it was just amazing! Silvan did make our vacation that much nicer and enjoyable! [Tripadvisor re-post]

Oh my gosh this tour was fun!!! And I\\\'ve found a new love...horseback riding!! This was my first time on horseback and the experience was fantastic! From the slow trot through a plantation to the full speed gallop in the waters of the Caribbean Sea this tour is a must do! I went with kids and even they felt safe and comfortable on their horses thanks to the experience and guidance of our two tour guides! Our Jaital driver (Silvan..hey!!:) was amazing! He picked us up, assisted us with getting prepped to mount the horses and was there waiting for us when we returned! This trip in one word...Incredible!!!
